Complement and Compliment

Complement and compliment can both be used as both verbs and nouns.

Complement

As a verb, to complement means to add to something, to make something complete, or to enhance the quality of something.

The waiter chose a wine to complement the meal.

The wine went well with the meal. It improved the meal.

As a noun, a complement means a thing that adds to something, or the quantity that makes something complete.

The wine was the perfect complement to the meal.

The wine went well with the meal. It improved the meal.

The school has a full complement of teachers.

The school has all the teachers it needs.

Compliment

As a verb, to compliment means to praise someone for something.

The teacher complimented the children on their good behaviour.

The teacher told the children she was happy with their behaviour.

As a noun, a compliment is an expression used to praise someone for something.

The teacher paid the children a compliment on their good behaviour.

The teacher told the children she was happy with their behaviour.
